The Miner is a machine block added by the IndustrialCraft2 mod.
It searches for ores in either a 5x5 or 9x9 area and then drills straight down and extracts only the ores (and the blocks in the way of the ores). Unlike the BuildCraft Quarry, it does not remove all of the stone in a given area, only that which is needed to access the ores. The Miner is a formidable machine to extract ores from The End and from the 20 lowest layers of the Nether, if you have mods that add ores to these dimensions.
Recipe [1][edit]
Prior to MC 1.6[edit]
Installation[edit]
The Miner requires a number of different components to function properly.
- Mining Drill or Diamond Drill.
- Mining Pipes, enough to reach the depth desired.
- OD Scanner for a 5×5 area or OV Scanner for a 9×9 area.
- Adjacent Chest or Pipe (items are ejected automatically).
- Adjacent Pump with liquid containers and chest.
Without a scanner card, the Miner will drill a single block wide shaft straight down. With an OD or OV Scanner installed, it will check a larger area. The Mining Drill is more efficient in terms of the ratio of power used per blocks harvested, than the Diamond Drill, but slower and incapable of mining Obsidian. The Miner needs a Pump and Empty Cells to clear fluids; otherwise it will be stopped by lava or water.
Operation[edit]
Both Miner and pump need a low voltage (max 32 EU/p) current energy supplied. Once powered, it will place the pipes below itself to dig down and extract ore it finds in its scan range. Any ore found will be brought up and ejected onto the surface if a chest or other inventory is not placed next to the Miner. Once the Miner has finished, the pipes can be retracted by removing the Drill from the Miner. If blocks are placed in the pipe slot at the same time, the Miner will refill the shaft (though not any side passages) as it reclaims the pipes [2].
Energy[edit]
It is recommended to supply the Miner with sufficient power for continuous operation, to avoid delays. More than 128 EU/t is required to operate at full speed with a diamond pick and OV scanner yielding about 4 to 5 blocks per second. One MV-Transformer and two LV-Transformers are best suited to avoid blowing up the Miner with oversized packets. Additionally, it seems that the most demanding resource for the power consumption is the drill, the scanner seems to make little to no difference in power needs. The diamond drill needs at most 256 EU/t, but 128 EU/t is not enough. The mining drill seems to need 128 EU/t, and 64 EU/t is not enough.
For power, consider using a Geothermal Generator or Thermal Generator when working deep underground with plentiful lava sources. For surface operations, a Miner can be powered with Solar Panels, or even an Advanced Lappack charging an MFE with an LV-Transformer to step down the voltage.
Efficiency[edit]
An easy method of efficiently using the Miner is to dig down to the upper level of the strata containing the ore being sought, thus avoiding the less desirable layers. Dig an horizontal tunnel and place the Miner in a grid pattern, moving it each time bedrock is reached [3].
Compatibility Issue[edit]
With the Forestry mod installed, the Miner can on occasion get stumped by the presence of a Beehive, which will need to be manually removed and the Miner reset before it can continue.
Usage[edit]
Miner can be used to create the following items:Note[edit]
- ↑ Electronic Circuit can be substituted with Basic Control Circuit.
- ↑ Once the Miner is retracted, it is recommended to mark where it was placed with a torch or similar object to help determine where to place it next. To prevent spelunking in areas that have been cleared already, check the mini map while it is in cave mode, to see holes in patterns, indicating areas preciously mined.
- ↑ On rare occasions, the Miner can become caught on a natural Cobblestone generator, a place where flowing water meets flowing lava to produce Cobblestone. The Miner will mine the Cobblestone as fast as it is produced leading to wasted energy and massive amounts of Cobblestone produced if unnoticed. If the player finds the Miner using energy but not producing anything but Cobblestone for an extended period and no pipes being placed, this may be the cause. The player may wish to either pack up the Miner and move to a new location or go down to fix the problem manually.
