The Crystal Capacitor is a magical tool introduced by Thaumcraft 3 later in the Thaumonomicon research tree. When completing the necessary research, you will be presented with the message:
"You have found of a way of restoring the Vis absorption properties to crystals. By combining eight of these crystals you can create a crystal capacitor that functions in much the same way as infused ore.
Each Crystal Capacitor can store up to 100 Vis and will slowly absorb or release Vis if nearby nodes are above or below their baseline levels. It can only absorb or release 1 vis every 5 seconds. The Crystal Capacitor functions with magical Vis energy in a way somewhat similar to electrical energy in IndustrialCraft2's BatBox or Thermal Expansion's Redstone Energy Cell. It functions by storing excess Vis from nearby aura nodes when they are above baseline levels (which mainly occurs when employing Crystal Clusters) and releasing it when the node loses baseline energy. As the Vis system is magical and does not use wires, this will all happen on demand.
The Dull Shards necessary to create the capacitor may prove hard to find for some. In this case, it is possible to produce Dull Shards either by producing them with the aid of the Stark Bee from Magic Bees, or by converting other shards to Dull Shards via the Magic Energy Converter from GregTech 4. Also, breaking a Crystal Core usually drops several dull shards.
The capacitor can be safely broken and placed again without losing any stored vis.
