Help:Editing

Editing a wiki may seem to be a difficult task if you are unfamiliar with it. This tutorial will explain basic editing routine.

Getting started: editing a page[edit]

It's very simple:

  • Click the "Edit" page tab at the top of the page.
  • Make all the necessary changes.
  • Click the "Save page" button.

Editing rules and guidelines[edit]

The #1 rule of any wiki editing is being bold. Making changes is encouraged. Other users can correct any mistakes you make, so don't worry, and just give it a try. There are all kinds of editing conventions, rules and guidelines for the editing of wiki pages, but the "be bold" rule is the most important of these. An edit can contribute whole new paragraphs or pages of information, or it can be as simple as fixing a typo or a spelling mistake. Remember: your edit has to improve the content of the wiki.

The ATLauncher Wiki has a Project:Style Guide which has all the necessary information on how to arrange the content on a page. Make sure your edits follow the guidelines mentioned in the Style Guide.

Edit summary: helping others understand your edit[edit]

You can enter a short note in the "Summary:" box to describe your changes, before saving. Do not spend too much time thinking about it: just write a short description of what you just changed. For example, you might say "added a recipe used in MC1.6.4", "fixed some numbers" or "added more information about the possible usage". This summary gets stored with your edit, and allows people to track changes in the wiki more effectively.

If the edit is minor (e.g. a few typos fixed, numbers changed in the Item template etc), you can also check the "This is a minor edit" box.

Preview: less changes, better output[edit]

It's a good idea to use the "Show preview" button to see what your change will look like, before saving it. This is also related to tracking changes because every time you save, this is displayed to others as a separate change. It's good to get into the habit of eliminating mistakes in your own work, by using a preview before saving, rather than saving, then having to do another edit just to make one or more minor corrections.

Show changes[edit]

Another option is the "Show changes" button which allows you to see the differences between the current version and your edited version.
